A life well lived

STORY: Lesley Naudè

Hester Agnes Geldenhuys
Hester Agnes Geldenhuys

Hester Agnes Geldenhuys (82) was a devoted mother and a loving wife who will be greatly missed. After a year of ill health she passed away on 14 January at the eShowe Old Age Home, after residing there for only ten days. Always a lady, Agnus was well loved by all who knew her. She was born in Germiston on 24 April 1930. When they were both the tender age of 18 Agnes met and fell in love with her husband, known today as Oom Nick. In 1971 they moved to Empangeni, where they have lived ever since. Together they had five children Erica, Marie, Nicoleen, Freda and Nicolaas and were married for 63 years on 6 December last year. Agnus loved her family more than anything else.

As a result she always had a camera at hand to capture every moment of their lives together. She was therefore affectionately known as ‘Ouma Mik-en-druk’. When her children were still at a schoolgoing age she could be seen at their every sport event and school function. She was always encouraging them to give their best and excel in life. Agnes was a committed Christian and was a member of the Empangeni NG Kerk. She was passionate about singing, flower arranging and tapestry, and would often be the one called upon to arrange flowers for friends and work colleagues. Before she retired at age 65, Ages worked for ten years at Ngwelezana Hospital and the Lower Umfolozi District War Memorial Hospital in administration.
