Thug taken down
STORY: Dave Savides
One of KZN’s most wanted crime masterminds was arrested on Tuesday night - at the Empangeni Police Station! Sibusiso Xulu, linked to numerous G4S cash-in-transit heists in the province, had apparently gone to the station to take possession of a vehicle which had been linked to a criminal case. According to Supt Willie Olivier of the crack Hawks unit targeting priority crimes, information had been received that Xulu would be visiting the premises.‘We did not have time to travel up from Durban and contacted the Empangeni Dog Unit, who surprised Xulu when he appeared and arrested him,’ said Olivier. The suspect reportedly did not resist arrest, but was quick to ask to speak to his attorneys. More arrests are expected as information about Xulu’s accomplices is obtained and identity parades are held. Xulu, linked to CIT crimes in Richards Bay and eSikhawini, is one of 10 dangerous criminals targeted by the Hawks in a 10 day swoop that has already netted five of the most wanted.‘We have already been congratulated on Xulu’s arrest by National Police Commissioner, Bheki Cele,’ said Supt Olivier. Xulu, a former G4S employee, could be linked to at least five robberies in the area that netted around R4-million. His modus operandi, known as ‘cross payments’, involved the intimidation of CIT vehicle drivers to hand over money to criminals and then report the vehicle as having been hijacked.
