Empangeni traffic signals off cue

STORY: Lesley Stephenson

Empangeni motorists are fed up with the recurring problem of glitches in traffic lights’ signal timing and out-of-order units. City Engineer Jogi Naidoo confirmed that the municipality was receiving a high number of complaints about the traffic lights and the timing of the signals.‘The problem is that we do not have a department dedicated to taking care of the traffic signals as larger cities do. It is currently a responsibility shared between various departments.‘We will look into the possibility of creating a separate department.’

Damage to municipal property
Questioned about who is accountable for repair costs when motorists damage traffic signs - as happened two weeks ago when the traffic lights at the Frank Bull and Main Road intersection were knocked down - Naidoo said it was standard procedure that the City hold the responsible party accountable for the costs involved. However, if the guilty party cannot be identified, the City has to absorb the expense.
