Zululand mayor for province
STORY: Larry Bentley
At the IFP National Council meeting held at Ulundi over the weekend, it was agreed that IFP National Chairperson, Cllr Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi be relieved of her duties as Zululand District Mayor. She will now take up a position in the KZN Legislature as soon as possible. While this has been widely debated in the media, kaMagwaza-Msibi was due to be re-deployed before the national and provincial elections last year. Magwaza-Msibi’s second term as mayor was due to expire in 2011. The meeting called upon her supporters to desist from further disorderly behaviour which is threatening to divert public attention from the objectives of IFP parliamentarians’ outreach programme. Due to the failure of 200 party branches to meet their 31 January deadline for inauguration, the national organiser recommended that the 2010 Annual General Conference be postponed to 28 - 30 May. The branches now have until the end of February to finalise the inauguration of their leadership who will then be able to attend the conference. The prayer meeting held by the ‘Friends of VZ kaMagwaza-Msibi’ was condemned by the party. They claim that the meeting took place without authorisation of the IFP or the Ulundi local municipality. The actions of this event are an example of various activities that deepen strife within the party. The council also condemned the role the National Police Commissioner has played in allowing this event to take place.
