Two pedestrians killed in high speed chase

Empangeni’s most wanted housebreaker arrested
Two people were left dead after a high speed chase by Empangeni police ended in tragedy at Ngwelezane’s taxi rank on Tuesday.
The chase after one of Empangeni’s most wanted housebreaking suspects came to an abrupt halt when the fleeing suspect lost control of his vehicle, mowing down two pedestrians.
The wanted man attempted to escape, but according to SAPS spokesperson for the Empangeni District, Capt Mbongeni Mdlalose, taxi drivers and the public were quickly on to him and brought him to the police for arrest.‘The suspect was first spotted by Empangeni police on Ngwelezane Road.‘Once he realised that he was being followed he drove away at high speed, jumping a stop street and a red traffic light.‘At Ngwelezane taxi rank he crashed into a taxi, hitting a male commuter, lost control of the vehicle and hit another pedestrian before coming to a stop.
‘Both pedestrians died on the scene.‘The suspect was then transported to Ngwelezana Hospital.‘He sustained minor injuries to his head and face and possible internal injuries,‘The suspect is being charged with two counts of culpable homicide, which could possibly be changed to murder charges, for the two pedestrians who died.‘He will also be charged with reckless driving. ‘This is in addition to the charges of housebreaking and theft,’ said Capt Mdlalose.
