Step of faith

STORY: Lesley Stephenson

Andrew and Jo-Ann Pienaar with their children
Andrew and Jo-Ann Pienaar with their children Jessica (12) and Jonathan (15) will relocate to Ingogo outside Newcastle, in order to rebuild Hope in Christ Orphanage

An Empangeni family is taking a bold step of faith, leaving the security of their home and jobs, to rebuild Hope in Christ Orphanage, at Ingogo, Newcastle. The orphanage burnt to the ground last week, killing 12 people and sending shock waves around the country. Sarah Holland (57), who died while saving nine of her charges at the orphanage, was the mother of Empangeni resident Andrew Pienaar. Andrew and Jo-Ann Pienaar, and their children Jessica (12) and Jonathan (15) will relocate to Ingogo as soon as all the necessary arrangements can be finalised. According to the Pienaar family, the desire to come alongside Holland and join her in her mission was already born in 2009.‘Mom had a difficult time; when she first moved in there were no windows, doors or running water - she built it up from nothing,’ said Jo-Ann. ‘It is scary for us to leave our comfort zone and to live without an income to depend on. ‘But this was not my mother’s work, it was God’s and He will help us to continue it,’ said Andrew. While the family is still going through the cycle of grief they believe it is important to start building as soon as possible. ‘She has laid the foundations for us to continue in her footsteps,’ said Andrew. Andrew’s five siblings have already begun fund-raising in order to make the dream possible. ‘The new orphanage will be bigger and safer,’ said Andrew. ‘Sarah never turned away a child in need, and so our plan is to build with that in mind,’ added Jo-Ann. The Pienaars plan to return to Newcastle on Thursday (today) for the memorial service for all those who died in the fire. While the cause of the fire is still not confirmed, the forensic report, which may give some clarity, is due to be released on Friday, 19 February.
