Stern anti-hobo action demanded

STORY: Dave Savides

The proliferation and attitude of beggars and street vendors at robots in Richards Bay has gone too far. That’s the view of an Arboretum woman who was twice in a week accosted by a tramp at the Saligna/R619 robots adjacent to John Ross College.‘The first time was on Thursday last week, when this guy came to the car window and asked for a kiss,’ said Angela Sargeant. This was hardly a Valentine’s moment, given the state of his dress and the stench of his body.‘Today (Tuesday) it happened again.‘This time he grabbed me roughly on the shoulder through the open window and demanded a cigarette,’ said Angela. ‘I was not afraid but I wondered what would happen to a young girl in that situation.’ Angela reported the matter to the police and a docket has been opened. Another man regularly seen in the company of the alleged ‘pest’ was thrown out of a shop in the Small Craft Harbour over the weekend. The City has also promised to take action against the many illegal street vendors who are conducting business at robot and stop sign intersections. This after official complaints were submitted by the Ward 3 committee.
