No buses

STORY: Larry Bentley

eShowe bus commuters have been without a service since the weekend. The Washesha Bus Service removed all their buses from their eShowe depot on Friday evening. The buses are now apparently in Durban. Although not confirmed by the Department of Transport (DoT), it is believed from reliable sources that the Department has suspended the contract with the bus company. No alternative service has been put in place. The bus service has been under financial pressure for a while with three of their buses already impounded by the local Sheriff of the Court. No one answered the numerous telephone calls made by the Zululand Observer to the local depot. Zululand Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZCCI) eShowe Branch chairman, Gareth Reeves is concerned about the developments. ‘The ZCCI is investigating the matter and is in contact with the DoT to try and resolve the problem. ‘The lack of transport affects business in two ways. ‘Employees are unable to get to their work and potential shoppers are also having to use taxis. ‘Taxi prices are more expensive and this is also an added burden to the commuters of whom many are pupils.’
