Dressing for success

STORY: Laurie Smith

The Crossroads Teen Centre in Empangeni is gearing up for an exciting programme to help introduce young school leavers to the professional world - but they need help. Crossroads Manager Nici Hornby says some 220 high school pupils come to Crossroads after school to play games, hold study groups and learn to play musical instruments, to name but a few activities. And now the centre is focusing on the young people’s lives once they leave school and enter the job market. ‘We are holding workshops to guide the teens through their studies, their exams, their bursary applications, and then into the workplace. Their newest project is more personal, and involves dressing and grooming the teens for their first interview. ‘We want to help these bright young people to feel and look their best when they have an interview,’ said committee member Vee Getkate. We are calling on Zululanders to empty their cupboards and donate any clothing that could become work wear for these young men and women,’ she said. ‘We will collect any good quality unwanted clothing from your home and you can rest assured it will be laundered, pressed and passed on to someone who may never be able to buy themselves a good quality working outfit,’ said Getkate. The Centre telephone number is 035 7725823 and Getkate can be contacted at vee@kznmail.co.za.
