Zululand to host SA netball champs
STORY: Earl Baillache
Zululand is hosting the South African Netball Championships, for the first time ever. Taking place from 22-27 April at the Veldenvlei Regional Sports Complex, the champs will feature 37 U19 teams and 37 U21 teams from 37 regions. ‘This is the first time that Zululand is hosting such a prestigious tournament.‘Normally, we travel to these events,’ said Zululand Netball President, TV Mkhize. The action will start at 8am every morning and will continue for the whole day on 10 courts. On Thursday 22 April, games will start at 8am, but will then break for an opening ceremony at 11am. Umpires from around the country will adjudicate, but because we are the host district, the majority of umpires will be from Zululand. Local umpires who have been officiating games, but have not been graded are requested to contact KE Gamede on 083 9919066 for assessment. On Wednesday 21 April, there will be an umpires’ course at the Veldenvlei Regional Sports Complex and local coaches will have the opportunity of attending a coaching course with the national coach Karen Strauss and the National Director of Coaches, Bennie Saayman.
Trials
Players are invited to attend the Zululand trials, taking place in Ulundi this Sunday 7 March.
