Rural sanitation relief

It’s all systems go for the Mthonjaneni Sanitation Phase 3 project following the sod-turning ceremony by uThungulu District Mayor, Ald Stan Larkan, local Amakhosi, ward councillors, residents and municipal officials
Over 14 000 residents in the Mthonjaneni Local Municipality will have receive toilets for the first time in the next few months.
This, as the uThungulu District Municipality officially launched the Mthonjaneni Sanitation Phase 3 project during a sod-turning ceremony at KwaMagwaza this month.
Benefiting 2 423 household recipients, local labour is also being trained to construct the toilets, ensuring transfer of skills and income generation for the poverty-stricken rural community.
The training of the Project Steering Committee, Labour Desk and construction of Demo toilets is nearly complete.
Catering for 14 136 people living in Wards 2 and 3 and infills in Wards 4, 5 and 6, the total project cost stands at R15 602 121.
Speaking at the ceremony, uThungulu District Mayor Ald Stan Larkan said the project was one of three being initiated in three local municipalities, namely, Nkandla, uMlalazi and Mthonjaneni, with the total cost estimated at almost R60-million.
