Freedom day celebrated in style

There was a distinct carnival atmosphere at the Veldenvlei Regional Sports Complex on Tuesday as close to 10 000 people gathered to celebrate 16 years of democracy. All the country’s cultures were represented as colourful clad revellers sang, danced, marched, cheered and waved flags in an incident-free event. A float procession from the Civic Centre accompanied a host of KZN political dignitaries to the venue, where entertainers had already swept the audience into a frenzy of excitement. Keynote speaker, KZN Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize, stressed respect for human rights, the serious addressing of fraud and corruption and strong crime prevention measures.
