Safety patrols do the job

A typical crime intervention by CSP members
A typical crime intervention by CSP members who intercepted a package of suspected stolen copper in Alton

The City’s Community Safety Patrols continue to prove effective in fighting crime and providing peace of mind for citizens. Established in November 2008 as a joint venture between BHP Billiton ASA, Control Risks Group and Khombindlela Security, with the support of the Mhlathuze Municipality and the Zululand Observer, the ‘bicycle patrols’ have to date achieved the following successes:
• 235 arrests - people detained for criminal activity
• 141 interventions - action taken to prevent crime and defuse situations
• 291 public service deeds - assisting in a range from medical help to water and electrical problems, reporting accidents, changing tyres, patrolling schools and bus stops, etc.

Recognition
Since its inception CSP has employed 285 members. The CSP has enjoyed the full support of the public in all areas of operation and has enjoyed the full co-operation and recognition from the SAPS. This has been well documented in the local media and backed up by statements made by visiting high ranking government officials including the Minister for Safety and Security and the National Police Commissioner. During the past 15 months, 11 CSP members required medical attention for injuries sustained on duty, including accidents (both bicycle and motor vehicle) and assaults. In all cases a full recovery was made with no permanent injuries sustained. Only two legal claims were made against CSP, both for minor damage to vehicle caused by bicycles colliding with them; these were settled without litigation. ‘The CSP staff remain motivated and proud of their contribution to combating crime,’ said CRG General Manager, Barry Walters. Negotiations with industry are ongoing for the long term financial sponsorship of the project.
