Zululand drenched

STORY: Larry Bentley

The earlier rains this week have, together with high winds, once again had Zululanders grabbing for their Winter woolies and jackets. Southern Zululand, however, recorded the highest rainfall over the 48-hour period ending Wednesday 27 July at 8am. Mandeni, with 158mm, was by far the highest recipient with eShowe recording 112mm and Mtunzini 130mm. Richards Bay airport recorded 81mm over the same period with rain dropping off sharply to the north, and Empangeni with 29.1mm
Charter’s Creek, Mkuze and Pongola recorded 42mm, 11.7mm and 24mm respectively. Inland there were good showers with Ulundi receiving 48mm and Melmoth 52mm. A freezing Babanango, where temperatures only reached a maximum of 7 degrees celcius and a minimum of 4.7 degrees celcius, recorded 14mm. The rainy weather is expected to clear for the weekend with temperatures reaching 23 degrees celcius by Sunday in Richards Bay and St Lucia and 24 degrees at Ulundi.
