Survivor Layla gets her wings

STORY: Kameya Reddy

Pilot Derek Smythe and Layla Meiring
Pilot Derek Smythe and Layla Meiring ready for take-off

Bearing Man Group (BMG) in Richards Bay has made leukaemia survivor Layla Meiring’s day. The company sponsored a helicopter ride around Richards Bay for the City schoolgirl. Arthur Gray of BMG won the bid for one of two flights at the Rotary Club’s Music Trivia evening in aid of CANSA, and decided to bless Layla with the opportunity.

Layla, a Grade 11 pupil at Richards Bay Christian School, has been fighting leukaemia for three-and-a-half years. She has fought the struggle and is now in remission after many treatments and surgery. Her dream is to become an Art Director, but after the awesome helicopter ride over the Bay, she might just become a pilot. ‘Thank you BMG for the amazing experience. I will never forget this day,’ said a happy Layla.
