City water losses unacceptable
The Executive Council heard on Tuesday that between July and September this year, more than R2.37-million has been wasted as a result of water leaks around the City.
This number is, however, down compared to the same period last year, which racked up a wastage bill of R2.7-million.
It was pointed out that towards the end of September, the municipal water loss section did install new pressure reducing valves and bulk water meters in a number of key areas, and these areas have experienced great improvement in the amount of water lost as a result of burst pipes and other leaks.
uMhlathuze Mayor, Elphas Mbatha noted that while the wastage had decreased, the loss was still unacceptable.‘We are losing a lot of water, and the relevant department should quickly come up with a strategy to deal with this matter.’
Council also noted that a budget of R2.5-million would be needed to achieve additional savings in areas that required full pressure management.
