Schools need to get behind rugby

STORY: Mike Harrison

‘How can we assist to get everybody involved,’ were the words of chairman Simon Harvey, speaking at the Zululand Rugby Sub Union’s coaches’ Annual General Meeting at Mick Kelly Park on Wednesday night. A group of 16 coaches and officials were in attendance, but only three of them were school masters. A little disturbing when considering the shortage of coaches at school level. It’s these people who should be attending meetings of this nature. We want our boys to continue playing rugby once they leave school. The Zululand Rugby Academy’s second year students are prepared to help, but it’s school masters themselves who must get involved. Changes to the interpretation of the rules and many other aspects pertinent to the game are discussed. ‘It is imperative that our schools show a little more interest in what is taking place in the world of rugby and make every effort to attend these meetings. ‘It’s important that we have the correct systems in place to see that our clubs, schools and representatives are properly coached. ‘If our schools stop playing rugby, as is in the case of John Ross College, who have now turned to soccer, then we will be dead in five years.’

Courses
The Zululand society will be hosting a level one coaching course on Wednesday 7 April. It is an eight hour course and could be split up over two days if necessary. A level two course will be held on 8-10 March or 15-17 March. This is a 16 hour course and dates will be finalised once documentation has been received. Applicants who have played rugby at a decent level can go straight to the level two course. In future, all these course will be held during the fourth term every year. This is a big plus as it gives the KZN association a chance to get things organised once rugby activities have been completed.

Boksmart
JP Immelman is in charge of Boksmart and everybody connected to the game must hold a Boksmart card. The Zululand association will be hosting a Boksmart course at Mick Kelly Park on Friday 26 February at 2pm. This is a six hour course.

Committee
The following office bearers were elected for the 2010/11 year:
• Chairman - S Harvey;
• Vice-Chairman - D van Schalkwyk;
• Secretary/Treasurer - H Muller;
• Additional members - JP Immelman, M Shabalala and L Douglas.
