Steenkamps and Jordan clean up trips
The Empangeni Bowling Club’s annual Two Bowl Trips competition came to its conclusion on Thursday and, it must be said, a highly successful one it was indeed. Played over a period of six weeks and with a full house of 72 bowlers, it was an outstanding advert for the game. At the start of play, last year’s champion Peter Garbutt was still in the running, but sadly for him it was not to be. In going down by a single shot (12-11) to Rita Meyer, he had to be satisfied with fourth place on 8+16, whereas Meyer, by virtue of her win, claimed the runner’s up spot with a score of 10+10. Mike and Olga Kay-Hards, together with Dave ‘Lighty’ King, recorded a 17-7 win over Neil Maddocks, which was sufficient to push them into third place on 8+29. The crunch game of the evening was that between the top two teams skipped by Etienne Steenkamp and Casey Meyer from which the champions were likely to emerge.
The winners
With Steenkamp continuing his rich vein of form, while being well supported by his wife Sonja and lead Kevin Jordan, he pulled away in the latter stages to win fairly comfortably 16-7, which was enough to give him and his team a championship winning score of 10+56. The loss must have come as something of a disappointment to Casey Meyer, Steve Corbett and Dennis Geach, who had been in the top two for five weeks and now found themselves in sixth place on 8+13. At the other end of the scale, Tersia Coetzee, Jacqui Ackerman and Charlene Hingle finished with a score of 1-88 by virtue of a peeled game against Ann Aldworth, Marie Strachan and Charmaine Corbett who, with two peeled games, ended on 2-28. Watching these two teams compete, however, it was obvious they were thoroughly enjoying themselves and are determined to do better next year. The session prize, sponsored by Steve Corbett Architects, was won by Brian Meyer, Steve Tomlinson and Les Dalais with +18. The Empangeni Bowling Club Competition Secretary, Byron Mathias, thanks the sponsors, without whose generosity these tournaments would not be possible.
