Seasoned cricket masters assembled at Addison Park on Saturday for the annual Golden Oldie cricket match - an event in honour of late Zululand stalwart Bully Drew. Born in eShowe, Drew first played cricket for eShowe and then Empangeni when he took up a farming appointment in the Empangeni district. He was not only a cricketer of note, playing for uThungulu and the then Natal Country Districts, but served on the Zululand Executive Committee and also as selector. Saturday’s 20/20 encounter saw Paul Gouge’s warriors getting the better of Ivan Hartley’s battalion with quite a bit to spare. Peter Young won the batting prize with an undefeated 22 in his team’s 63 all out in 18 overs. Besides 15 from Brian Harrison and 10 from Julius Truter, the rest of the batting failed to get into double figures. Errol Boulle with two wickets for four runs in two overs, Guy Kayhards with 2/5, Guy Richardson, Heath Gush, Vincent Drew and Kenny Schlanders with one each were the wicket takers. Boulle claimed the bowling prize. Gouge’s team made a spirited reply and with excellent contributions by Richardson (20), Ian Dickens (10 not out) and Kayhards (13), they passed their opponents’ score for the loss of eight wickets.
Hartley (2/11) was the pick of the bowlers. The event was sponsored by Ritchie Auto, Bell Equipment, Jackson Motors and Wesbank.
