'My Son' the top snoek chaser

STORY: Cenessa Stork

‘My Son’ carried the top anglers - winner Mark de la Hey, second placed John Travis, Wesley Rapson and Claude Boardman as top skipper

Even though this year’s Abbott van Rooyen Memorial Snoek Derby at St Lucia hadn’t weighed in a good deal of snoek, the turnout of anglers was an accomplishment. Thirty-three boats entered and 97 anglers competed, but only seven snoek were caught. Mark de la Hey on 'My Son' hooked a hefty R15 000 first prize with his catch. The competition finished just in time before the bad weather hit Zululand. A total of only 53 fish got weighed, but even with little snoek success, main sponsor, Richelieu kept the spirits high with donations of R25 000 and great promotions all weekend. Day 1 swindle was won by Brent Goncawes with a 13.6kg yellow fin tuna and on day 2 by Craig Yeld with an impressive 19.4kg baracuda.

Winners
1 - Mark de la Hey on ‘My Son’;
2 - John Travis on ‘My Son’;
3 - Brad McLaren on his fishing ski.
Juniors
1 - Theo Fourie on ‘Lyfie’;
2 - Luc Duffay on ‘Live Wire’;
3 - Divan Botha on ‘Cyclone’;
4 - Massimo Fierro on ‘Eye Tie’.
