Copper theft remains problem

STORY: Conelia Harry

Copper thefts remain a huge problem for large corporate organisations who lose millions in damages and replacement costs. According to Business against Crime Manager Dave Whittaker, local theft of copper cable and copper plates is a huge concern. Theft of signaling cable on railway lines is occurring in the more remote areas of Nseleni, KwaMthetwa, Manbhuka and Ntambanana. And while concerted steps are being taken by SAP and Transnet Freight Rail to combat this, Whittaker says information is urgently needed and can be reported to the SAP 10111 number. Commenting on the thefts of non-ferrous metals, he said this remains a definite problem in South Africa and in the rest of the world due to the worldwide shortage of copper and subsequent demand for metals.
