Promoting the noble game

Mazwi Khuzwayo gives young golfers from Sitholinhlanhla Primary School some tips during a training session
Interest in the sport of golf is growing amongst youngsters in the rural community of Mzingazi.
Thanks to avid golfer Mazwi Khuzwayo, who is employed at the Richards Bay Coutry Club Pro Shop, a development squad of Sitholinhlanhla Primary School pupils are engaging in weekly coaching clinics under his mentorship.
Khuzwayo started playing golf in 1996 and plays off a 7 handicap.
In February this year he started coaching clinics in Mzingazi and received the backing of Richards Bay Country Club.
The 16 youths utilise the course every Thursday afternoon at no charge.
The young golfers receive an allowance which covers their transport fees and a meal on the day. Kuzwayo believes it is his duty to create awareness of the sport in rural communities and, hopefully with sponsorships from local business, he will be able to extend the clinics. ‘My request to local business is for financial assistance to increase sessions to at least four times a week. ‘This is an expensive sport, however I believe practice makes perfect and some golfers show potential to become professionals,’ he said.
